EP Review: Clouds Taste Satanic – All I Want For Christmas is Your Soul (Kinda Like Music)

Founded in Brooklyn in 2013, Clouds Taste Satanic have become one of New York’s most revered underground doom bands, capable of taking listeners on a sinister voyage through the psychedelically charged realms of metal. The quartet has always had a penchant for harnessing deviant riff wizardry in their progressive approach to music, but none more so than on this new release.

Ahead of the release of their ninth studio album next year, the group have released a unique Christmas collection called ‘All I Want fort Christmas is Your Soul’, out via Kinda Like Music.

A unique festive offering, All I Want for Christmas is Your Soul features three twisted versions of holiday classic hits. Namely All I Want For Christmas Is You, You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch and Little Drummer Boy. If that wasn’t enough, they have also covered the Spinal Tap classic Christmas With The Devil.

Aside from that Spinal Tap cover, these are festive songs most will be very familiar with, but not necessarily in this way. First up, given the dark and groovy twist, it’s everyone’s favourite yuletide hit, Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You. As hateable as this song has become, due to over-saturation, Clouds Taste Satanic certainly freshen it up with a riffy cover.

Of course, Clouds Taste Satanic are an instrumental band, yet there is no missing vocals as the tunes are so familiar. Who doesn’t immediately recognise the delectable sinister sound of You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch? Clouds Taste Satanic really give this a doomy vibe, and it’s probably the most threatening version of this track most will have heard.

Christmas With the Devil is a lot of fun, a track that doesn’t have a ton of covers, so immediately, it stands out. Heck, if you’re not that familiar with the original, you will find a classic Christmas head-banger to enjoy.

Finally, it’s a track made for the doom style, Little Drummer Boy, and here, Clouds Taste Satanic let the drums and bass do a lot of the heavy lifting and it gives this thumping track so much more girth. Heavy is the understatement, but it’s also so recognisable, and easily one of the more thrilling covers heard.
