EP Review: Norrsköld – Red Night Fever (Self Released)

Deriving from the cold forests of Sweden, Norrsköld has entered the global metal scene to spread a unique metal sound, blending atmospheric black metal with melodic death/folk metal. Their music has been spread on a global scale since 2013, and with three albums and two EPs already released, Norrsköld return with their third EP ‘Red Night Fever’. Out on November 8th, 2023.

Norrsköld spread a darkness that most will be more than happy to let smother them. Crafting music that is emotionally layered, delightfully complex, and unforgivingly harsh. All of this, and so much more, is on emphatic display on this new EP. With Norrsköld showcasing just how far they have come over the past ten years.

Combining exciting elements of melo-death with atmospheric blackened metal, and infusing elements of folk metal into things, Red Night Fever is a class act from beginning to end. A beginning that is heartily melodic (Between Worlds) and an ending that is empathically melo-death (Dialogue With No One).

In between the opener and closer, Norrsköld hit with force on the creatively meaty monster that is Souls Arcane. A track that shows just how well this band melds the blacker side of metal with the melodic side of death. Then there is Ashen Crown, where guitars that have already screamed with passion, reach even greater heights, and vocals that have been downright demonic, get even more hellish sounding.

Finally, to complete a wicked EP, it’s Non-Existence and a wonderful portrayal of speed and blackened melo-death power. Norrsköld continue to deliver on each and every release.
