EP Review: Solothurn – Servitude (Self Released)

Solothurn are an alt-metal band based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, who draw influence from bands like Alice in Chains, Deftones, Tool and Soundgarden. Their debut EP ‘Servitude’ will be released on November 17th, 2023.

An EP that explores themes of the modern urban reality against a backdrop of failing government, societal despair, addiction and general disenfranchisement. It’s a reflection of the environment in which it was crafted – the crumbling and ruinous Belfast inner city.

Servitude is a strong showcase of Solothurn’s talents, just three tracks, but each high-powered and effective. It’s a sample platter of what this band can offer, and it is mighty tasty.

Kicking off with a grunge-infused rock hit of adrenaline in the form of Sentience Fades, Solothurn drop some damn fine groovy hooks, crashing riffs, and soaring vocals here. Yet, as enjoyable as that is, it’s the following energy uptick that comes from War that really showcases their vibrancy. A slice of hard rocking groove, with some moody tones giving it an alternative flavour. Both tracks are bangers.

Which also applies to In Servitude, perhaps the EP’s most dramatic sounding track, but also one that, again, shows off the strength of their individual parts and how, when put together, they convulse and combine into something pretty damn unforgettable.

They’re an exciting entry into the alternative metal world, and based off this EP alone, the future is going to be a lot more exciting with them in it.
