Album Review: Rile – Pessimist (Church Road Records)

Rile, the hardcore band hailing from Salt Lake City and featuring members from the renowned group Cult Leader, will release their debut album, ‘Pessimist’, on October 27th via Church Road Records.

What an absolutely disgusting and delightful discharge of noise Rile have to offer on this debut album. Kicking off with carnage at the forefront, Dead End is utterly maniacal music, yet it is also the first example of Rile breaking away from the traditions of hardcore as they switch the tone effectively for a darker and heavier latter half.

Then, it’s Climb Out and here, Rile start to extend themselves, not just in length, but in style too. An experimental side to their chaos starts to ooze through, and this track is all about tension. Tension created by erratic drumbeats, piercing guitar riffs, and desperately dangerous sounding vocals.

That they can then follow that with something as discombobulating as Hidden from Light is truly impressive. A track that takes some of its props from the world of doom, has an industrialised feel, and finds Rile at their most intense sounding. It’s a spectacular track on an album of spectacular tracks.

Need further proof? Check out Stone Tapes. A track that betrays everything we think we know about ‘hardcore’. First, by being over seven minutes long, and second, by showcasing a maddening blend of abrasive moodiness and haunting melody. It’s one of the most unique tracks on the entire record.

Although unique elements are the bread and butter of Rile’s sound and that continues into the dramatic Half Love. Before the album wraps up with one final extensively brash blast of coarse noise in the form of the title track. Rile have absolutely delivered here, creating something unforgettably different and something undeniably savage.
