Horror Short Review: Barbie 2 (2023)
From director Alexanderthetitan comes Barbie 2, the follow-up to Barbie, a horror short that we summed up as being ‘a strong short with creepy vibes’. Barbie 2 can be summed up as more of the same, although in an attempt to expand on things, it does slip into sightly sillier territories.
Shorter then the first, DJ Dallenbach reprises her role as the ‘life-size’ Barbie, who is going door to door looking for a buyer for her boxed Barbie doll. Her weird behaviour, and doggedness that she also comes with the doll, exhausts one man (Michael Cunningham) who agrees to buy the Barbie, just to get her to leave, it seems.
Which, if you saw the first, is the last mistake he will ever make.
The Barbie doll appears to be the one in control, and on its insistence, sets the ‘life-size’ version on a deadly path. It’s this aspect that is explored here, giving Barbie 2 a fresher feel, without giving too much away.
The original had a touch of ‘tongue in cheek’ silliness about it, this one is more of a dollop.
