Album Review: Modern Technology – Conditions Of Worth (Human Worth)

Conditions Of Worth is the second full-length album from the sludgy noise rock band, Modern Technology. The record will be released through Human Worth on October 13th as a limited edition Transparent “Utility Yellow” Vinyl. 10% of all sales proceeds will be donated to charity Choose Love, helping to provide humanitarian aid, search, rescue and legal advice to refugees and displaced people across the globe.

One of the UK’s most compelling bands, Modern Technology return with an even stronger example of their filthy and raucous eccentrics on Conditions of Worth. Serving up an eight-track slab of emphatic and exciting noise, twisted and distorted by imagination and creativity that knows no bounds.

Modern Technology are quite an indefinable band, making use of recognisable genre styles, but not constrained by any of them. The grey area between sounds, where things bleed into one another, is exactly where Modern Technology sit, and it is one of the most exciting things about them.

Another is the band’s social consciousness and how they use their music to make important statements, share their outlooks, and tackle issues that effect everyone in some way or another. From mental health, to the effects of austerity, societal degradation, and the ever increasing climate emergency. Modern Technology have plenty to say, but do so in a relatable and listenable way. Even if their unpredictable musical style is as challenging as it is effective. What Modern Technology are capable of doing is consistently exciting and Conditions of Worth is no better example of that.

From the moment Dead Air’s chuggy riposte arrives to the moment Believer attacks with manic assuredness, this album delivers. Every single track has its own unique makeup, and each shows a band letting a bit of cathartic chaos infect their minds. It’s a special album and multiple listens unveil more layers that confirm nobody is making ‘noise’ like this in the UK today. Just contrast something like Fully Detached, a short and sharp blast of nastiness, to something like the title track, a drawn-out, uncomfortable, and genre-embracing giant of a track. It’s simply fantastic stuff.

Modern Technology never disappoint and they deserve a ton of attention. Conditions of Worth is certainly going to give them a lot more.
