Album Review: Cannibal Corpse – Chaos Horrific (Metal Blade Records)
Death metal legends Cannibal Corpse return with their new album ‘Chaos Horrific’, out on September 22nd, 2023, via Metal Blade Records.
Cannibal Corpse. A band that needs no introduction. The stalwarts of unbridled death metal intensity in its rawest and most raucous style. They’ve been grinding this axe for a long time, using it to slaughter the masses, before making sure it’s as sharp as always for the next time.
2021’s Violence Unimagined was arguably one their most brutal and bloodiest releases in the modern time, and Chaos Horrific shares a lot in common with that record. Mainly because it was written shortly after the conclusion of the Violence Unimagined sessions, due to the pandemic keeping them off the road.
Don’t think of it as a continuation or a copy though, rather see Chaos Horrific as its ugly brother, and bear in mind that Violence Unimagined was pretty damn ugly in itself.
As guttural and grim as ever, but having had years of refinement, Cannibal Corpse continue to showcase an unrepentant dedication to death metal. Chaos Horrific is ten tracks long and each hit hard and heavy. A savage assault of flaying riffs, crushing percussion, and monstrous vocals, it’s Cannibal Corpse as we all know and love them.
Of course, that does mean the naysayers have little to change their mind about, but who cares? Cannibal Corpse certainly don’t as their dedicated fanbase will eat this up hungrily, as they have done everything laid before them before. This might not be the freshest pound of flesh that Cannibal Corpse have put out, but it’s still damn tasty.
Each track sits proudly on its own as another Cannibal Corpse classic, but there are a few that shine just that little bit brighter. Overlords of Violence is one, simply because it is out and out death metal carnage. Summoned for Sacrifice, because of the guitar soloing. Blood Blind, because of how stompy the bass and drums are. Fracture and Refracture, as it has got a really strong old-school Cannibal Corpse flavour, and Pitchfork Impalement, simply because it is a whirlwind of exciting death metal.
Pick out any track you want, and Cannibal Corpse will deliver a f**king nasty listen. Long may they continue to wreck necks, break limbs, and tear flesh from bodies.
