EP Review: Death of Me – Hell’s where you make it, Love’s where you fake it (Self Released)

Alternative emo rock band Death of Me will release their debut EP, ‘Hell’s where you make it, Love’s where you fake it’ on September 8th, 2023.

Much anticipated, thanks to the form shown with the previously released singles, Death of Me start this EP of with hefty emotion as Yearn (An introduction) bleeds into Halo. Here, a blending of elements of energetic post-hardcore, romanticised emo melody, and punchy alt-rock groove hits. It’s a blast, with a chorus that puts a silly smile on the face because it is so infectious.

Such a hot opening, and it just keeps on getting better as Death of Me really make emo the prominent feature of the anthemic Cry. Before showing depth to their overall sound with some lovely synth-infused melody and strong alternative atmosphere with True Blue. One of the EP’s prettiest sounding tracks, and again, another big anthem.

Lueur d’espoir (An interlude) is short, but very atmospheric, before Your heart, your casket sees the group reach soul-churning levels of emo-tastic alternative rock. The stark emotion and honesty that comes through here is special. Then there is The long lost art to never falling apart, a track with plenty of vigour, but the lovable level of touching melody as found throughout the rest of the EP.

The cherry on top of this impressive EP is Choice words and cursive. Death of Me spreading their emo-tendrils in deeper, but in a comforting way. Like life, there is no getting away from the downs just to enjoy the ups. This track, and the EP as a whole spreads a message of love, but also about loss and all that entails. It makes for a much more meaningful experience if you let that in.
