EP Review: Blessed Black – Seasons: Vol. 1 (Self Released)

Heavy doom quartet Blessed Black will unleash a new EP on September 1st, 2023. Entitled Seasons: Vol. 1, this 3-song offering is the first of a series of EPs planned for 2023 and 2024 that mark a new chapter in the band’s career. Seasons: Vol. 1 features the debut of new guitarist Jake Stone, and finds the band exploring themes of existentialism, grief, healing, and rediscovery.

A tasty offering from Blessed Black that forms part of a bigger picture, showing that they have a good grasp on the modern way of releasing music. Drip feed content, keep the buzz alive, and ensure the heavy doom tone of this band never strays too far from the forefront of the mind.

Which it won’t anyway because Blessed Black’s style of doom is deliciously dark. Seasons: Vol. 1 showcases a band moving forward, while not abandoning what they are so well known for. Starting with the riffy groove and eldritch vocals of Hellbender. With a sound that is massive, layered, and extremely smooth to the ears.

No major shift with Obsidian, except this is a much rockier effort and the riffs are just stunning. It’s as close as to accessibility as this band can get, while still having deep doom thrumming throughout.

Whereas, Unable’s intro melody and explosion of doomy power sets the senses aflame. One of three absolute head-bangers on an EP that leaves you hungry for more. Based off this alone, this release run is going to be a lot of fun.
