EP Review: Theia – The Wet Die Young (WDFD Records)

British alt-rock duo Theia have had an exciting and eventful festival season, including playing a pool party in Greece and one where a lightning strike shut down a stage. They are now going to raise their game even more with the release of their latest EP ‘The Wet Die Young’ on 4th August 2023.

In the words of frontman Kyle:

Crowds are growing, buzz is building: and just like a bad dream – the ‘ones to watch’ are becoming something you can’t look away from…

Theia command a dedicated fanbase because they are so likeable. Their alternative rock style is extremely appealing, and they provide listeners with big, heartfelt and relatable anthems. Pick any Theia song you want, and chances are you will find something of value there.

Which is very much the case with this new EP. Theia offering up five tracks, around 18-minutes of music, for the diehards and new listeners to sink their teeth into. Starting with the fan orientated I’m Plastic, here the band pay tribute to those have been with them through thick and thin. Delivering a body-shaking showcase of rock groove with an infectious chorus, and a brilliant flare-up of ‘out and out’ heaviness.

What a banger of a start, and it just gets better from there. First up is the experimental fun and animated rockiness of Live This Down. Theia really playing around with the sounds here to create something unique and clever. Then there is the introspective title track, which has a simple melody and isolated vocals, right up to the brilliantly energetic chorus. One of the catchiest tracks on the entire record.

Though the mighty sound of Tastes Like God comes extremely close too. Theia touching the heart and soul, before switching the entire tone of the track up and transforming it into something much more intense. It is a wonderful anthem and such an enjoyable EP. So, it’s no surprise that the last track, Everything, is just as good as all that came before. Theia modernising, stretching those experimental muscles, and once again, delivering an unforgettable chorus.
