Album Review: Creak – Depth Perception (Prosthetic Records)
Offering up a volatile mix of nu-metal, hardcore and metalcore, Newcastle four-piece Creak will release their debut full length album ‘Depth Perception’ on August 18th, 2023 via Prosthetic Records.
The world ‘volatile’ is a great one to sum up Creak. Not just this album, but the band overall. Words like ‘chaos’ and ‘coarse’ can be overused when it comes to hardcore-infused metal bands but Creak really do embody them. From the very start, Creak sound dangerous. They sound like they are barely in control and that they might literally breakdown through the sheer intensity of what they are doing here.
All of that is very cool, and a lot of fun to listen to, but what really makes this album more than just another example of being dragged across red-hot gravel, are the experimental touches. Moments of atmosphere, nu-metal style fusions, delinquent use of electronica, and so much more. It’s what cuts through the absolute tidal wave of horrendous hardcore heaviness to make this a much cleverer release.
That being said, there’s nobody who isn’t going to be a little bit in love with the stupid level of speed and aggression that makes up Depth Perception. Call it a ‘depth charge’ to the mind, and it will leave you in bits long before it’s even come to an end. In fact, after experiencing the first handful of tracks, it becomes a really daunting task to carry on. Yet, the temptation is far too great. Who doesn’t want to see what fresh hell Creak can unleash, after all?
There are no shortage of young, hungry, and pissed off bands playing an array of metallic hardcore and metalcore styles. So much in fact, that standing out from the pack is a real problem for many. Everyone wants a slice of the same pie, and the portions are getting smaller.
Creak says f**k that and just body slams the entire thing.
