Album Review: Dusk Cult – Night Sky Revelations (Self Released)

Two years since the release of their debut album ‘Embrace the Lunar Age’, two-piece black metal act Dusk Cult return with the follow-up ‘Night Sky Revelations’. It will be released on July 1st, 2023.

The world of black metal can never have enough bleak and brutal sounds for the demonic entities that live under the stormy sky to enjoy. Especially when the noise comes from such a strong band as Dusk Cult. A two-piece that blends savage nastiness with emphatic harmony and atmosphere. If you thought the debut album ‘Embrace the Lunar Age’ was a bit of a revelation, you’ve not heard anything yet.

The crack of thunder signals the arrival of Dusk Cult as they hit a horrifying speed with Black Cloud Worship. It’s akin to be struck by a lightning bolt, the frenzy of heaviness will make the hairs on your body stand up.

Sending some chills through the soul with the opening melody of Lupercalia, Dusk Cult bring forth a charging beast of thumping heaviness here. Before sending the mind careening into the abyss with the epic morose sound of Western Embers. It’s fascinating to hear cleaner vocals in this track, and the calming melodic touches are truly special.

Whereas Ascent of Mars is a chilling trawl through the horrors of black metal hell, Dusk Cult unleashing a cacophony of noise here that really gets under the skin. Especially when it abruptly releases haunting melody. It’s this level of creativity that marks this album out as a different black metal beast. No further proof needed than Mondaufang and Celestial Fury, a pair of tracks that sees Dusk Cult pushing themselves into enigmatic territories.

Interest in what the duo are doing here is still extremely high as the blistering instruments and scathing vocals of Lunar Geography takes hold. Leading to the longest track on the album, the finale of Fires in the Gloom. Where Dusk Cult take a more measured approach to melody, but still unleash black metal carnage as though their lives depend upon it. The storm is ending.

A phenomenal follow-up that is a necessary listen for all fans of the blackened stuff.
