Album Review: Voidmilker – Labyrinthical (Tragedy Productions)

Gabriel Hugo, known for his work in Lascar, presents his solo project, Voidmilker. A black metal entity that will reveal itself on July 7th, 2023, with the debut album ‘Labyrinthical’. Out via Tragedy Productions.

It’s black metal heaven… or hell, depending on your point of view with Voidmilker’s Labyrinthical. Not only does Gabriel Hugo play all the instruments in this band, he also does the vocals. A true talent birthed of the blackened void.

Labyrinthical features seven tracks of cold, harsh, and unrelenting black metal ripped straight from the deepest and darkest depths. Melody, while present in places, is not an aspect of this music. It’s all about freezing the blood in the veins through curdling heaviness, brash force, and constant brutal rhythm. Although there are plenty of times where rhythm is replaced for a noisy expulsion of nonsense.

The big appeal of this record, what draws you in and keeps you coming back for more, is how it nails the sense of darkness. The album creates a bleak atmosphere that hangs over the mind, the more time spent in the company of Voidmilker, the more it surrounds the mind, body, and soul. It’s not suffocating, but it is immersive.

Once you are finally able to snap yourself out of the state Voidmilker put you in, you might find that you’ve been through the album several times in the row. Not only that, the temptation to return to the void is just too damn tempting.
