Album Review: Serpent Corpse – Blood Sabbath (Temple of Mystery Records)

Hailing from the Montreal death metal scene, Serpent Corpse will release their debut album ‘Blood Sabbath’ internationally on July 5th, 2023, via Temple of Mystery Records.

Good death metal bands are ten-a-penny these days, but great death metal bands? They’re a little harder to find. Say hello to Serpent Corpse who prove, with nine tracks of clattering and crashing ruthlessness, that they are a great death metal band.

As strong of a debut as possible, Serpent Corpse throw their all into making a debut album sound as malevolent as possible. A brash and brutal example of the intensity of this genre as they seamlessly blend the new and old worlds of the sound. It’s disgustingly raw, but refined with heavy head-banging groove.

There’s a real sinister and horror-laden vibe to the entire record, exemplified by the vocals. It’s ritualistically dark and twisted music. Giving the impression that Serpent Corpse are revelling in the bloody orgy of violence their music creates. Something that many fans of garish and grim metal will find extremely compelling.

Maybe the big appeal of this record is that it sits in the darker, blacker, camp of death metal. It’s clear that Serpent Corpse have influences across the metal spectrum and have utilised them to craft their own slice of nastiness. Sometimes, taking their time to inflict the pain, gleefully to some degree. At others, attacking with all the ferocity of a starving beast. It’s a contrast that fits together seamlessly as the overall tone is built on brutality.

Strong stuff from Serpent Corpse. Keep a close eye on them.
