EP Review: Aasar – From Nothing To Nowhere (Seek and Strike Records)
Aasar are a new brutal death-industrial outfit from Italy, experimenting with crushing sonic extremes. Their new EP ‘From Nothing to Nowhere’ will be released on June 30th, 2023, via Seek and Strike Records.
The band describes the EP as:
Gravitating around themes such as spirituality, symbolism, pagan mythology, and nature hidden behind apocalyptic and sci-fi metaphors. The lyrics form a narrative cycle that, spacing on these themes, puts the human being as the main character. He has to go through the act of being before, during, and after life; re-live his internal pain, and personal mistakes which will drag him into eternal damnation. Some of our concepts and symbolisms come from the Egyptian and Norse mythology, because of their bond with spirituality and the cosmos.
The short review goes something like this: Aasar are the next big thing in brutal tech death metal and you should probably get on board now before they blow up. The proof is this exceptional EP.
That’s all you need to know really. Yet, it does Aasar a disservice for us to not go into more detail about why they are such an exciting band. So, here is the longer review and it starts by mentioning the first two tracks, Rise of the Dark Ether and the title track. The former is an ominous and cinematic introduction that sounds like it came from one of the Terminator movies. Whereas the latter is a frenzy of brutality, the speed is one thing, but the manner in which Aasar deliver it, is another. It’s absolutely ruthless, layered with harmonious tones, and can be summed up as one of the most crushing songs you’ll hear all year.
Fall into Oblivion then brings the technical side of the band to the forefront, Aasar continuing to batter the senses into oblivion with a wild showcase of vicious power. Before it’s back to frenetic speed with the manic Wasteland and guitarist Valerio Quirini of Sharks in Your Mouth joins the band for something exceptional. Unsurprisingly, the riffs and soloing on this sinister and dark track are immense.
Finally, the cherry on top is Defying Necrosis, one last blast of brutal death metal mayhem. Aasar making sure they leave the listener feeling extremely dazed but desperate for more.
