Album Review: Throw The Fight – Strangeworld (Long Branch Records)

With over 100 million streams and nearly 700k monthly Spotify listeners, Throw the Fight have developed an impressive fanbase in their time as a group. Three years after the release of their latest album ‘Settle Your Sins’ the band make their return with their new album ‘Strangeworld’, released June 30th via Long Branch Records.

Sometimes you don’t need to hear much to understand just why a band has hit such a popular stage in such a short amount of time. Sometimes their hard rock and alternative heavy sound is so clearly accessible that it’s no wonder so many people have gravitated towards them. This is the case with Throw the Fight. A band that exemplifies accessibility, anthemic enough to turn the heads of a casual rock fan, but with enough bite to excite the diehard fan. With both sides comfortably agreeing that what this band has is massive hooks and catchy choruses.

Strangeworld is packed with them and there’s not a single track that doesn’t attract attention. Kicking off with a pair of punchy groovers in Cover Your Tracks and Obey. Throw the Fight don’t need to demand your energy or voice as most will be more than willing to join in here.

Although it might not get more anthemic than Lost Without You as Throw the Fight begin to stretch their melodic muscles a bit more here. A track with a ton of heart and some sweet lyrical content. Although that more melodic tone is also heavily present in Sorry, Not Sorry too. A touch of effects and a more vigorous chorus makes this another Throw the Fight hit.

The heavier energy is back with the impressive Hourglass, Throw the Fight having some real growl to their sound at moments here. Following that up with Shadow Self, a track with one of the biggest choruses of all. Before Lost in the Lies ends the ‘original’ portion of the album with chunky groove, energetic riffing, and a big hooky chorus, of course. It’s the Throw the Fight way and it’s still exciting to hear seven tracks in.

A bit of a short album though, right? Well, to bulk it out, Throw the Fight have gone back to their 2022 EP ‘Snake Mountain’ and selected two of the three tracks there to remix. Namely the title track and Wake Up! Both original tracks hit all the marks for the Throw the Fight sound, so these remixes feel a little pointless. Especially as far as remixes go, they’re not that different. An odd decision and one that feels like padding.

No big deal really though as the bulk of the album is extremely enjoyable.
