Album Review: Dieth – To Hell and Back (Napalm Records)

Death thrash force Dieth – featuring the iconic line-up of Grammy Award winning bassist David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth), Swedish Grammy nominated guitarist/vocalist Guilherme Miranda (ex-Entombed A.D.) and drummer Michał Łysejko (ex-Decapitated) – will release their debut full-length ‘To Hell and Back’ on June 2nd, 2023 via Napalm Records.

A much-anticipated release, Dieth might be a new band on the scene but its members are no slouches when it comes to heavy music. Any doubts about what this band can offer today’s metal scene are put to bed immediately with the resounding heavy heft of the title track. The punchy death and thrash sound is extremely appealing from the get go.

Following that strong introduction to the album, Deith go for a metal anthem with Don’t Get Mad… Get Even! One that a crowd can scream and shout along to, all while going as wild as possible in the pit. Something they certainly achieve with some rollicking riff work, mouthy vocals, and thrashy intensity.

With Wicked Disdain, the seething and snarling darkness of their death and thrash blend is extremely prominent. The blending working wonders here. Yet it pales in comparison to the following head-banger that is Free Us All. A track with some experimental bass interludes, pounding death groove, psych-tinged rhythms, and so much more. It’s the first track that really stands out as something fresh and new in this style of metal.

Though there’s still plenty of surprises to be found as the album goes on. Welcome surprises like the stoner-groove infused Heavy Is the Crown, a track notable for its accessible sounding chorus and bluesy guitar solo. Or the metal ballad that is Walk with Me Forever, a track that sees Dave Ellefson take over lead vocal duties.

It’s a one-two thrash and death metal knockout with the following Dead Inside and The Mark of Cain. The former, a thrashy and frantic anthem, and the latter as aggressive as this album gets. Before In the Hall of The Hanging Serpents showcases some frantic riff work and Severance wraps things up in a surprisingly pretty way. Ending as it begun, the album coming full circle, perfect for starting it all over again. Which most will certainly want to as Dieth have left an impression with this debut.
