Album Review: Heart Attack Man – Freak of Nature (Self Released)

American punk rock band Heart Attack Man return with their 3rd studio album, ‘Freak of Nature,’ released on May 26th, 2023.

An album filled with honesty and emotion, Heart Attack Man have clearly taken a long hard look and figured that we’re all the same. We’re all just clinging to a rock in space, hoping that one day it will all make sense, but if it doesn’t, who cares? We’re all just a freak of nature, but we’re all in it together.

This thought-frame, and the believability in how Heart Attack Man express their feelings, makes the melodramatic album start of Practiced in The Mirror a welcome one. The soft guitar melody and vocals are wistful, and as it kicks up a slight notch, the more powerful side of the band becomes more prominent.

Which leads nicely into the punchier pop-punk antics of the title track, the 90s vibes of Like a Kennedy, and the danceable and singable attitude of Late to The Orgy. With these three tracks, those of a certain age might find themselves transported back in time, but everyone will find themselves thoroughly enjoying the accessibility of Heart Attack Man.

Speaking of which, then there is the uber catchy Stick Up. A track that can proudly be called a Heart Attack Man anthem. Don’t be surprised if you’re singing this as loudly as possible long afterwards.

It’s back to something more dramatic with God Called Off Today, an aspect of their sound that Heart Attack Man do very well. Before C4 lives up to its name by being an explosive blast of punk-rock noise. It’s not been stated yet, but there should be no doubt here that the star of the Heart Attack Man sound is the vocals.

Keeping things tight and short, there’s no chance of this album becoming sickly, so spirits are still high, even with the emotive touches, as 9 On Your Bedside and Clown School come along. Both tracks offer up different levels of sentiment and liveliness. Leading to the explicit drama of See You on The Other Side. A finale that falls a little flat when compared to what else is found on the album.

It’s not even close to enough to derail the overall enjoyment that Freak of Nature brings. Albeit, enjoyment that will be enhanced by a love and appreciation of old-school pop punk.
