EP Review: Taurwen – Omnia Mutantur, Nihil Interit (Self Released)
Hailing from Turkey, Taurwen is dark folk/pagan solo project that mixes neo-classical works with subtle elements of dungeon synth and dark ambience. The EP, ‘Omnia Mutantur, Nihil Interit’ was released at the end of April 2023.
Heavy on atmosphere and heavy on ambience, Taurwen creates a memorable soundscape that is more cinematic than anything else. This EP deals in dark folk and pagan sounds and it does an incredible job of capturing the feelings this sort of music brings. From wonder to fear, and everything in between; Omnia Mutantur, Nihil Interit makes you feel.
What is quite surprising though, is how elaborate the experience can be. Taurwen has found depths not often plumbed and focused on a certain amount of world-building here. You can smell the pine, feel the mud squelching underfoot, taste the arid smoke from burning fires, and feel the weight of fantastical history pressing down upon the mind.
It’s extremely impressive stuff, capped off with an extremely cool cover of Darkthrone’s En Vind Av Sorg.
