Album Review: Frozen Soul – Glacial Domination (Century Media Records)

Texan death metal band, Frozen Soul will release their chilling new album ‘Glacial Domination’ on May 19th, 2023, via Century Media Records.

This is more than just a cold chill that makes you shiver; this is the howling wind and icy tendrils that suck the life out of you. Frozen Soul are back, and more intense than ever. Death metal, sure, but death metal given an injection of ice. Horrible, harsh, and hellacious, across ten tracks and an intermission, Frozen Soul cause unmitigated destruction.

Starting with the beastly pace and brutal heaviness of Invisible Tormentor and Arsenal of War. It’s an instant hit of carnage, showcasing Frozen Soul’s measured approach to savagery. An approach that stays consistent throughout as Frozen Soul drop one of their meatiest bangers so far in the form of Death and Glory. A hit of death metal adrenaline that makes you want to march into war on behalf of this band.

An extra and highly enjoyable touch throughout the album is moments of atmosphere and horror-like sounds. Such as those found on the chunky Morbid Effigy or the 59-second dramatic intermission that is Annihilation. It’s what makes Glacial Domination a great slab of death metal and the high quality continues into the title track and the self-titled track. Two more garish examples of Frozen Soul’s horror-heavy nastiness. They will have everyone, who has made it this far into the album, held tightly in their icy grip.

The cold might be bone-deep now but there’s no willingness to escape the biting experience as Frozen Soul continue to show that they’re just getting better with the monumental drum and riff combo that comes on Assimilator. Before Best Served Cold delivers a solid beating and Abominable sends shivers down the spine, caused by just how demonic the vocals sound.

Finally, it’s with a cacophony of long-lasting destruction in the form of Atomic Winter that Frozen Soul draw a line under this album. A track that vaporises rather than freezes, even though it’s very much in keeping with the overall ruthlessness of the record.
