Album Review: Therapy? – Hard Cold Fire (Marshall Records)

Now in their fourth decade of existence, Northern Irish rock outfit, Therapy? will release their much-anticipated sixteenth and new studio album ‘Hard Cold Fire.’ Out on May 5th, 2023.

The grungy rock sound of Therapy? never gets old and this new album finds the three-piece reinvigorated and looking to energise listeners with a memorable set of good-feeling and animated hits. The first of which is the robust groover of They Shoot the Terrible Master, an instant Therapy? body mover and sing-along.

That’s then followed by another strong blast of hyperactivity and grungy rock with the catchy Woe. Before the previously released single of Joy lands with as much impact as it did when it was first released. A modern Therapy? banger if ever there was one. The chuggy riffs and big chorus are just the stuff we all love about this band.

Yet, another thing we all love is when they let loose and get a bit chaotic, as they do on the frenetic Bewildered Herd. Or when they let the chugging riffs dominate as they do on Two Wounded Animals and To Disappear. It’s Therapy? gold and like their name suggests, it’s cathartic.

Especially when they keep things so heart-filled and focused. The moody verses and anthemic chorus of Mongrel delivering more high-quality Therapy? energy. Before the excellent Poundland of Hope and Glory sees the band slip into more comfortable grunge-rock territory. No complaints though, it’s a banger of a track.

No complaints about the final two tracks either, Therapy? showing their versatility and passion with two more heavyweight rocking hits called Ugly and Days Kollaps. A satisfying pair of vigorous, moody, melodic, and reflective tracks. Helping ensure Hard Cold Fire can proudly sit alongside Therapy?’s most popular work.
