Album Review: Atavistia – Cosmic Warfare (Self Released)
Combining elements of melodic death metal, black metal, and Scandinavian folk, epic metal band Atavistia will release their gigantic new album ‘Cosmic Warfare’ on April 21st, 2023.
Vocalist Mattias Sippola comments on the new album:
This upcoming album portrays many emotions which have transpired over the past two and a half years. There are dark moments full of pure chaos and anger to moments of triumph and tranquillity. I am very proud of how the album flows together.
The word ‘epic’ can be over-utilised when it comes to describing music, but every so often, something comes along that encapsulates it perfectly. Say hello to Atavistia and their epic new album, Cosmic Warfare.
Incredibly lavish from the start with the cinematic intro of Omega Nova, the transition into brash blackened heaviness on the title track is seamless. Here, Atavistia showcase blistering speed and brutalising intensity combined with gargantuan melodies that make it sound so grand.
Unbelievably eye-watering in its ferocity but gobsmacking in its rich detail, and the album is just getting started.
With epic tunes come epic lengths and most of Cosmic Warfare’s offerings are extreme in their length. Case in point, the 8+ minutes of Ethereal Wanderer which features Vincent Jones. Here, Atavistia offer up a cacophony of crunchy death and black heaviness broken up by dramatic symphonic elements and folkish splendour.
Extensively creative music, this perfect blend of majesty and metal continuing into the 10+ minutes of Spectral Rebirth. Where Atavistia drag the listener on a journey of incredible sounds. The soundscape they create here is the single most extensive piece of music on the entire album with an unending number of peaks and valleys. Exhausting? You bet your life, but it’s worth every ounce of energy. Especially as there’s so much more ground to cover.
The penultimate track, Divine Destruction is heavy on the atmosphere and has deep folk infusions, but the magnificence of the vocals and the blasting drum beats are what really stands out. This is one of the more intense showcases of Atavistia’s instrumental carnage.
Before the longest and, check this, the most epic track of all comes along to end Cosmic Warfare in exceptional stylish fashion. It’s called Forgotten Silence and it is a sumptuous example of everything that makes this album, and Atavistia as a whole, so very special. If your mouth had somehow closed at any point during, it will once again, be wide open at the insane level of varied and wide-ranging musical detail delivered throughout this track.
A stunning release that makes it perfectly clear Atavistia are ready for the big time.
