Horror Movie Review: Easter Bunny Kill! Kill! (2006)

Written and directed by Chad Ferrin, Easter Bunny Kill! Kill! is a grotty and grim slasher that takes its inspiration from the grindhouse/exploitation era of horror. A ‘no-budget’ movie, what it lacks in class, it makes up for in effort. If there’s one take away from this watching experience, it is that everyone involved was up for it.

Remington (Timothy Muskatell) is a scumbag. There is no better way to describe him. We’re first introduced to him wearing an Easter Bunny mask as he robs a convenience store and kills the clerk. Following that, he heads over to his girlfriend Mindy’s (Charlotte Marie) to meet her son for the first time. A teenage son named Nicholas (Ricardo Gray) who suffers from a form of cerebral palsy and Remington can barely hide his disgust from showing.

He manages to though as he is charming and lovely to Mindy as she’s attractive and it’s a place for him to stay. In fact, he figures he is on to a good thing here so much to Mindy’s delight, he suggests he moves in and that he can help care for Nicholas.

However, once Mindy is out of earshot, Remington makes it clear to Nicholas that he’s the boss now. Mocking the child for his disabilities, his obsession with Easter, and threatens to kill the rabbit he was given by a homeless man on the street should Nicholas say anything to screw up Remington’s plans.

He has no problem throwing out constant offensive slurs directed at the boy. However, when left alone to look after Nicholas when Mindy has to work a double shift at the hospital, he takes his abuse to a whole new level. Heading out to find some prostitutes and inviting over a paedophilic friend to have his way with the boy.

He’s detestable and easy to hate, which is credit to how Timothy Muskatell plays him. Likewise, the balance of Charlotte Marie kindness and naivety, and Ricardo Gray’s innocence shine brightly throughout here. There’s little to fault about the main cast, although the less said about the supporting cast, the better.

It sure sounds pretty grim, right? Well, it just gets worse as someone dons an Easter bunny mask and decides to make Remington and those around him pay with blood. Is it Nicholas getting his revenge? Or is it someone who Remington has wronged in the past?

Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill! pushes its main characters to the limit while also testing the audience’s patience. There’s a lot of build up here and not a lot of killing. When the blood does start to flow, the grubbiness of the movie goes into overdrive, as the effects are pretty good for a movie with no budget. However, while some may find the drama and abuse watchable, many won’t as it just goes on for too long. It’s very easy to check out way before any knife or drill is picked up and used on fleshy parts.

Yet, there is something quite compelling when it comes to such dedication to make the viewer uneasy. At least until the final few minutes throw in a twist that is so silly, you might find yourself laughing out loud. We’re not just talking about the killer reveal but what happens after. It is a twist but one that no-one could see coming because it is so stupid.

Love it or hate it, everyone that sees it, will remember Easter Bunny Kill! Kill!
