Album Review: Stoned Jesus – Father Light (Season Of Mist)
Father Light is the fifth studio album from Ukrainian prog-doom-grunge trio, Stoned Jesus, set for release 3rd March 2023 via Season of Mist.
Written as the first half of a double LP, Father Light is the opener to a much larger musical world; an introduction to this deep new chapter of Stoned Jesus.
There are many reasons to be impressed with Stoned Jesus’ new output. Such as their notable progression in musical styles, their expansive blend of genres, their imagination, and how that is channelled into something wholly unique.
All of this, and more, showcased with aplomb on this new album, Father Light. Where the introduction (the title track) focuses on acoustic melody and dreamy vocals, before leading into the gargantuan epic that is Season of the Witch. An 11+ minute heavyweight of doom and grunge metal, the measured intensity is captivating from the start and takes the mind into progressive depths that aren’t often experienced with this level of heavy noise. The peculiarities showcased by the instruments are simply outstanding.
From that to the powerful Thoughts and Prayers, an authentic appraisal of social media and online culture. Expressed in moody, doom-infused, and infectiously groovy style. It’s one of the highlights of the album, with killer vocals and expressive lyrical content.
With each new track, exciting new breadths are reached as Porcelain passes the 8-minute mark and sees Stoned Jesus deliver delicate moodiness that builds up in power and passion. Where, eventually, the trio explode in fuzzed out fashion, before mellowing out again. The back and forth is an erratic journey for the listener, but one that is impressively pleasing.
Before we get a ballsier blast of energy called CON. The proggy groove, the grungy vibes, and odd jerks and herks make for an eccentrically exciting listen. Something that continues into the finale of Get What You Deserve, where the Father Light experience is extended into mind-bending territories, all while holding the attention firm with bursts of doom-infused meatiness.
As good as everything else on the album, an album that leaves you wanting more. Especially when you know that it’s one half of a double EP. We can’t wait to see what comes next, but for now, Father Light is an immensely satisfying listen.
