Album Review: Maggot Crown – Apparition of Faces (Vargheist Records)

Death-grind duo, Maggot Crown returns with their sophomore full length album ‘Apparition of Faces’ for a March 1st, 2023, release via Vargheist Records on CD format.

Pure punishment in aural form. Maggot Crown are a nasty pair and Apparition of Faces reflects that. Thirteen tracks of vomit-inducing death-grind that plumbs the dark depths of hell to expose the wriggling innards of belligerence and abhorrence.

It’s not hyperbole to describe this album as the sound of anger, hate, and revulsion. Its corrosive heaviness and raw intensity seeps into the mind and soul. The monstrous sound as raw as a fresh wound and the fury as intense as salt poured into it.

Yet, for all its egregious horror, it’s not without talent as there’s no denying this level of undiluted grind-infused death metal couldn’t be sustained without it. Maggot Crown is made up of two death metal heavyweights in Justin Vølus and Jared Moran and they certainly put forward all their talents into something new. Even if it’s as fresh as a month-old corpse that has been rotting in the sun.

This abrasive and guttural nastiness is appealing though. Partially because it takes a no-nonsense approach, but also because it calls to the animal in all of us. It’s calls to the beast that begs to be unleashed, to let the bloodlust take over, and go wild in a society that demands you get in line. Listening to Apparition of Faces, ancestral feelings of survival and fear are awakened.

Is it going to be for everyone? Of course not! However, if you’re after an unrelenting sense of savagery and a ruthless example of death-grind at its most egregious, than you have to check this album out.
