Album Review: So Long, Space Girl – Your Heroes Are All Dead (Self Released)
Pop punk quartet So Long, Space Girl will release their new album, ‘Your Heroes Are All Dead’ on February 23rd, 2023.
Pop-punk at heart but with a groovy and heavier rock twist in their souls, So Long, Space Girl showcase a natural progression with Your Heroes Are All Dead. All while being infectious, energetic, and believable.
Twelve tracks that offer varied takes on a familiar formula, Your Heroes Are All Dead begins in robust fashion with the title track. So Long, Space Girl delivering an instant shot of pop-punk adrenaline with a delightful chorus to boot.
From that, to something a bit moodier and more melodic with Spineless. Albeit, featuring crashing instrumental flashes that give this album an overall heavier sound. Followed then by the anthemic Peaches and Cream, a track that you just can’t help but sing along to. Before the eccentric melody and punchy chorus of I Hate You But I Hate Myself More swings with intent and hits harder than you might expect. The instrumental and vocal harmonisation is on point here.
It’s been quality so far, but Reasons is one of the album’s highlights as it’s got a nice, peppy pace and the vocals are smooth as hell here. One of the more ‘pop-punky’ sounding tracks but in the best way possible.
Although the quality certainly doesn’t drop with the punk-infused fire of Turn It Off, where a slamming guitar solo stands out. Or with the thrilling anthem that is Like A Bomb and the wicked drum/guitar combo of Rust. Before there’s a big shift with Tonight. A track that has a melodramatic and morose heartiness to it. However, a little over the halfway point it transforms into something quite different and So Long, Space Girl showcase their power and passion. A wonderful track.
The final portion of the record then sees the group pushing themselves that little more and proving that calling them just ‘pop-punkers’ isn’t exactly fair. Just listen to the rocking groove of Pull the Trigger and the enigmatic tone shifts of Into the Great Undying to understand that. So Long, Space Girl continue to prove that this album has all the makings of a band about to break through the glass ceiling.
Admittedly, the finale of A Long Way To Run, A Longer Way To Climb almost seems ordinary by comparison. Even though it is more excellent and enjoyable So Long, Space Girl memorable energy.
The sound of a band with confidence and much clearer understanding of who and what they are. Your Heroes Are All Dead is an attention grabber and seems certain to make So Long, Space Girl a recognised name going forward.
