Album Review: Wretched Fate – Carnal Heresy (Redefining Darkness Records)
Nearly 4 years since their jaw dropping debut album, Fleshletting, Wretched Fate are back with a new addition, guitarist Fredrik Wikberg, and a new album, Carnal Heresy. It will be released on February 24th, 2023, via Redefining Darkness Records.
Death metal tinged with grind, blending modern thinking with old-school savagery. Carnal Heresy is the sound of bloody and brutal mayhem. The Swedes know what works when it comes to extreme metal but aren’t afraid to give it their own twist. Something that becomes more and more apparent on multiple listens. This is a surprisingly layered effort, even if the fresher elements are buried amongst the rotting carcass of a familiar sound.
Featuring nine beastly efforts, the undiluted speed and viciousness of Wretched Fate’s attack is what the word extreme embodies. From beginning to end, it rages. Pulse-pounding and scathing riffs, blunted beatings and bone-breaking drums, grim and guttural vocals, Carnal Heresy has it all, and then some.
The some coming from Wretched Fate’s taste for flair and showmanship. Which makes Carnal Heresy more than just another death metal modern revival album.
Flair and showmanship that oozes through the death metal dressing and showcasing some extra pungency that turns heads. All while not being too indulgent and losing the core aspect of the sound. One highlight of their more imaginative side is the monumental sounding Cry From Behind – an atmospherically charged listen. Just one example of the overall cleverness of this album and the depth that Wretched Fate has.
