My Favourite Video Game: Skidders

My Favourite Video Game is a guest feature from bands and artists where we set them a simple task… tell us about your favourite video game. In this feature, producer and blues, rock, and jazz guitarist Skidders (aka Steve Skidmore) accepts the challenge. You can read all about his choice below.

My favourite video game is the tennis one my father brought home from his electrical shop, in Bearwood near Birmingham. He and his brother owned the shop and sold and rented TVs, other electrical items and records (those 12” things that go round at 33-1/3rpm). I remember they sold a “Colour TV” transparent screens which you taped on to the front of your black & white TV to make it into colour. It was very clever, as it was blue green and some other colour, horizontaly striped. And guess what? The demo photo they has behind it was sky, fields and something else that matched. So you can imaging how people got on with that when they installed it home with cellotape (if they weren’t clever enough to spot the design error before purchasing).

Anyway, my Dad was my hero and quite often brought things home to “try out”. And when he brought the tennis computer game home that went ping-pong and you had to make sure you aligned your “bat” with the object coming over sp it bounced back (was is tennis or was it an alien? Long time ago…). He also brought albums home to listen to that he would take back to the shop to sell later when we’d had a good listen. Gene Vincent, The Shadows and Elvis Presley I recall. So what about “proper” video games? Well, I’ve had a go with my son-in-laws, but I’m so shite, I just watch and crack another beer open. That’s good enough for me!
