Album Review: Glyph – The Time of Peril (Weregnome / Fiadh)
The Time of Peril is the second full-length album from USBM solo artist, Glyph. The album will be released on January 27th, 2023, via Weregnome (cassettes) and Fiadh (CDs).
As dark, evil and twisted as black metal comes, Glyph presents a raw and rough version of the genre but excels in delivering strong atmosphere to make The Time of Peril an immediately more interesting release.
The scathing intensity on show is delightfully wicked, Glyph drawing deeply from the well of horror. The ‘no-nonsense’ approach to their form of black metal is both exciting and terrifying. This is the fiery sounds of the underworld, a soundscape that hits like a tsunami and chokes the air from the lungs.
Furious and pained, in equal measures, Glyph pours the darkness into the mind with creative recklessness. From the first second, to the very last, it is the sound of hellish horror crafted by a being who knows exactly how to express the inner turmoil being felt.
For such an unending wall of blackened noise, it is surprising refreshing to the ears. That seems to come from the strong sense of gloomy atmosphere that Glyph infuses throughout the nine tracks. However, it also speaks volumes about the talent of this solo artist. USBM solo projects aren’t that rare these days but ones with the talent of Glyph are extremely hard to come by.
Wallow in the dark depths of The Time of Peril. It’s deceptively comforting.
