13 Days of Halloween: Album Review: Horrorpunk’s Not Dead – Vol. 1 (We Are Horror Records)
Horrorpunk’s Not Dead!’s first compilation album ‘Vol. 1’ is due for release on October 21st on Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, and Limited run CD.
This will be the first of many compilations coming from Horrorpunk’s Not Dead! (Think the “Punk-O-Rama” series) and ‘Vol. 1’ features 29 tracks of terror from some of the best horror punk bands in the world today! 19 of which are exclusive to the compilation!
Says Dan. P (Creator/host of Horrorpunk’s Not Dead! Podcast):
The reasons behind this compilation are clear! To pay homage to the “Punk-o-Rama” series, and to showcase the best modern Horror Punk, Deathrock, and Psychobilly bands in the world! To quote 5¢ Freakshow.. We may be freaks, but we are not alone… The Horror is here!
The Label! We Are Horror Records: I started this label so I can release these compilations under one umbrella so to speak. All of the HPND! compilations will be released through this label. I already have interest from bands within the scene, so eventually, I’ll branch out into being a bonafide label! This comp, “Vol. 1” is my first release, and I’m already at work on Vol. 2 because the dead don’t rest!
What bands come to mind when you think of horror punk? For many it’s going to be Misfits, arguably the pioneers of the genre. If you’re a little younger, maybe it’s the likes of Son of Sam and Muderdolls. Regardless of who comes to mind, rarely is it bands in the mainstream in modern times. To many, horror punk is dead but to others, it’s black-heart is still beating heavily in the underground. You just need a shovel. Which this compilation album is more than willing to provide.
Featuring a staggering 28 tracks and 1 intro, Horrorpunk’s Not Dead! Vol. 1 is a delightfully wild trip into the world of horror punk. Where the blood flows, the flesh crawls and the shrieks you hear in the darkness chill to the bone. It’s a fantastic showcase of the genre and the perfect listening for Halloween season.
Of course, so many tracks mean varying amounts of quality but if there’s one thing this album ensures, it is that you’re never going to be bored. From the macabre introduction by The Ghoulfather to the hyperactive energy of Feed the Flame by Voice of Doom. To the groovy rock hit that is Pumpkin Guts’ Girl Who Stood on a Grave and the outrageous old-school punk tune that is Killing the Scene by The Tomb of Nick Cage.
How about the stupidly infectious Da Humans Run Run by Dickie Devil and the Deviants? The melodramatic My Girlfriend’s A Zombie by The Tomb Tones? The metal-orientated Graveyard Runaway by Rusty Apper or Diechotomy’s deviously delightful Blood Beach?
Highlights are going to be down to individual taste here as the number of tracks means that there are different styles of horror punk on show. However, most will agree that Silent Horror’s Astrofiends is one of the catchiest tracks on the album and that Damage 66’s Fuck You (If You’re Not Bruce Campbell) is a tongue in cheek head-banger that you just can’t help but love.
Likewise, who could possibly dislike the raw horror peppiness of Ripsnorter’s Infected, the sinister horror ode that is The Whiskey Bats’ Flesh Eaters or the raucous noise of Horror Story’s Dry Blood? There’s too much quality across the 29 tracks to not find at least a handful you can enjoy. Horror punk’s not dead and the proof is in this album.
