EP Review: Kid Bookie – Mass Hysteria (Marshall Records)

Tyronne Hill, known better by his stage name, Kid Bookie, climbed his way through the rap and grime scene before launching full-throttle into the rock and metal sphere with his third studio album “Cheaper Than Therapy.” That LP would become Bookie’s most notable release to date, peaking at Number 7 on the U.K. iTunes Rock Charts and including collaborations with Tech N9ne, Sid Wilson, Kamiyada+, and Corey Taylor.

Now, fully entrenched in the gritty slums of heavy music, backed by industry titans, having proved to naysayers that he knows a thing or two about seamlessly blending 808s and gnarly riffs, there’s finally breathing room to flex his talents. Thus brings us to Kid Bookie’s new EP, ‘Mass Hysteria,’ arriving October 7th 2022 via Marshall Records.

Take your god-damn gatekeeping elsewhere. Kid Bookie has absolutely nothing to prove, least of all to those who are going to gnash their teeth over his style of rock and metal. Sure, it’s not going to be for everyone, but it’s going to be for a hell of a lot of people. Kid Bookie has insane crossover appeal, heavy enough to excite an open-minded metalhead but with grime and hip-hop elements that will excite that side of the fence.

What we have here with Mass Hysteria is an EP of anthemic hits that contain a lot of sharp intensity and blunt aggression. One that earworms its way into the brain but also proves to be a challenging listen. There’s a lot more depth than you might first think and on multiple listens, layer after layer reveals itself.

Highlights include the Korn-esqe/rap hybrid that is Let it Ring that features singer/rapper Ziey Kizzy and the downright infectious chorus of Here We Go. That’s just two from an EP that has seven tracks (including an intro) and each offers a little something different. Very interesting, very listenable, and sure to be very popular.
