EP Review: Father Deer Hands – Sad Souls Don’t Float Upstream (Self Released)

Having only released a handful of singles since their inception, Father Deer Hands has seen fast acceptance and love from their hometown crowds and media alike. Now, the band return with their debut 3-track EP, ‘Sad Souls Don’t Float Upstream’ to prove they’re here to stay. Out on October 7th, 2022.

New to this band? You’re not alone but expect to hear their name on the lips of many more people once this EP finds its way into ears. Father Deer Hands’ brand of alt-rock, emo and post-hardcore is both familiar and refreshing as the four-piece take the sound in exciting new directions. All while being thoroughly anthemic and memorable.

The EP has three tracks and each offer something different. From the rock and emo punch of Feel the Low that transforms nicely into something wilder and more intensely heavy. To the riotous Sunlight Dance that changes tone halfway through and becomes delightfully light and melodic. Leading to a powerful and effective finale.

Before For the First Time in Years wraps things up in style, Father Deer Hands unleashing an eclectic medley of heaviness, speed and melody. Easily, the most fascinating track on the EP.

Three tracks, three impressive hits. Expect to be hearing about Father Deer Hands a lot more over the next few years if they continue to release music as strong as this EP.
