EP Review: Muscle Vest – Hot Hot Hate (Prank Monkey Records)

Taking influence from bands such as Pissed Jeans, Melvins, Mclusky, The Jesus Lizard and Whores, London noise-punks Muscle Vest continue to reflect the struggle of the average person against an exploitative system within a crumbling state.

Their new EP ‘Hot Hot Hate’ represents the bands efforts in capturing their furious live sound on record. It confronts contemporary ire – degenerate and callous behaviour shown towards women across all media, mid-life stagnation, and the struggle of achieving anything of note from within a collapsing society. Also, murders.

Hot Hot Hate will be released on September 22nd, 2022, via Prank Monkey Records.

Confidently noisy and intense, Muscle Vest continue to impress as this new EP finds the five-piece at their most chaotic sounding. The attempt to capture the sound and feel of a live performance, nailed.

You can smell the sweat and taste the blood of the pit within the first track, The Slaughtered Lamb. Muscle Vest showing that the genre styling of ‘noise-punk’ doesn’t necessarily mean unlistenable. It just means you’re going to be left feeling like you’ve had seven shades of shit knocked out of you.

Saying that though, Don’t Dream is diabolically disordered. A short slice of instrumental and vocal screams, screeches, wails, and roars. Part brilliance, part madness, all impressive. Yet, it almost sounds tame when compared to the following head and body blows delivered by Solitary Life’s abuse.

Over far too quickly, Fun Imaginative Murder wraps the EP up but what a way Muscle Vest go out. Dropping the tempo for something that is darker and more twisted. The monotone riffing, the drawling vocals, the sharp bursts of crashing and banging percussion, the gradual rise of explosivity and the strong sense that at any stage, Muscle Vest could unleash hell.
