Album Review: Broken Jaw – Purge Yourself (The Oracle Records)
Broken Jaw is a punk metal band from Gloucestershire, UK due to release their new album ‘Purge Yourself’, which is coming out on the 23rd of September via The Oracle Records.
Making a right old racket, Broken Jaw’s style of punk metal is extremely forceful and furious. Beginning in riotous fashion with the sound of a news report detailing the people of London rising up to overthrow their oppressors. Incredibly pertinent timing for such an introduction and the perfect Segway for Broken Jaw to bring frantic anarchy with the following track, The Truth Hurts. Pure and uninhibited intensity.
Stand up and pay bloody attention. Broken Jaw are bringing the fire and things are well and truly heating up as they deliver the stompy and smash-mouth Parasite’s Delight. Huge and hefty, this is bone-breaking stuff. Yet, it’s also where Broken Jaw show a little expansion on their sound with a cleaner chorus.
Continuing the rage, the metallic punk side of Broken Jaw really flairs into life on the gnarly Sapientism and the ‘in-your-face’ Purge Yourself. The intensity of these two tracks alone will put hairs on your chest.
Furiously uncouth and delightfully fast, Lackluster burns brightly because of the unrestrained drumming. KC Shuffle has thumping riffs and energetic vocals, but it’s Jake & Elwood that stands out amongst the middle part of the album. Simply because it’s a less measured, messier and unconventional blast of punkish metal. Where the vocals are partially done in spoken word style and it shifts the tone several times throughout. All while being mercilessly heavy.
The wonderfully titled Blasphemy, Blaspheyou, Blasphereverybody comes next and serves as an ominous 90 second intermission/introduction for the crunchy groove of Turn. It. Up! An egregious example of Broken Jaw’s continued feral nature. So much energy expended, the penultimate track, Oyf requires a herculean push but thanks to Broken Jaw’s unending and undeniable wrath, it’s very easy to enjoy. Hell, it might take first place for being the heaviest track on the album.
Airs & Graces then brings the album to a close with all the care and comfort of a wild and starving animal. Broken Jaw living up to their name as there will be a few of them in the pits created by this finale.
