My Favourite Video Game Featuring: Leaving Eden
My Favourite Video Game is a guest feature from bands and artists where we set them a simple task… tell us about your favourite video game. In this feature, drummer Jake Gynan of rock band, Leaving Eden took up the mantle, and you can read all about the choice below.
This is a great question, and I wonder if anyone else has given the same answer. Out of all the games I’ve had the luxury of playing, no other keeps me invested like Old School RuneScape, OSRS for short. It’s the most unique MMORPG, especially for its time. Originally, RuneScape released in 2001 and I started playing in 2006 when a friend introduced me to the game at the school library and I was instantly hooked. It was the first game I’ve ever experienced being able to make your own decisions and just explore the vast world at your leisure because there’s really no “correct” way to play this game. The graphics may seem a little outdated, but the core gameplay and the way it feels so rewarding when you achieve a goal is truly second to none in my opinion.
There’s just so much to do and the amount of thought and detail that’s put into everything is truly astonishing. You have 23 different skills to train all the way to level 99. They will make you stronger and more adequately prepared to defeat whichever monster you come across (or other player, for those who like the rush of PVP). One of the staple things in OSRS is achieving a specific skill level that you’ve been training for to better improve your account and when you finally reach that milestone it gives more of a sense of accomplishment than other games. If you crave more story-based gameplay, the amount of quests in this game will keep you busy for a long time. Each quest has its own unique story and they are just as crucial to your player development as your skills, because a lot of areas in the game aren’t fully accessible until you’ve completed the quest that’s associated with it. Some of the quests are short, but some are long, well thought out stories that immerse you in the world. Think of Frodo’s mission in Lord of The Rings. He set out on his journey, but of course it wasn’t as simple as they originally planned, and the adventure that ensued was epic. A lot of these quests resemble this and it’s why they stand out in OSRS versus the kinds of quests you’ll find in other MMO’s.
Now, let’s get into the bossing stage of the game, which is probably my favorite aspect. Originating in 2001, RuneScape runs a little differently than most games. Everything that happens in the game occurs entirely on a cycle of “ticks” which is 0.6 seconds, or 100bpm on a metronome. Therefore, each action you make, no matter when you click, will occur on the next tick. So the best and most efficient way to kill these intricate bosses is to take advantage of that system, by making sure you perform an action (clicking your mouse) in intervals of 0.6 seconds. Not to say you must click every tick, but having a metronome set at 100bpm, which is already built into the game client, and making sure your clicks are on time with any of the beats will improve your bossing experience tenfold. This is why I love this aspect because it almost becomes like a rhythm game at that point, and me being a drummer, I find this game to be the absolute perfect game for me.
