Album Review: thoughtcrimes – Altered Pasts (Pure Noise Records)
The Long Island-born five-piece that is thoughtcrimes will release their highly-anticipated full-length album, Altered Pasts, on the 26th of August 2022 via Pure Noise Records.
There’s a new name on the chaotic modern hardcore scene and everyone better watch out as thoughtcrimes are spin-kicking and two-stepping their way to the big time. Having already made one hell of an impression in their short existence, one listen will make the knowledge that thoughtcrimes is the brainchild of former Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Billy Rymer very clear. He plays guitar and drums on this album and while this is in no way a repeat of Dillinger stuff, the same unbridled chaos, odd melody turns and blistering aggression is very prevalent throughout.
Be under no false illusion though, thoughtcrimes is its own thing and Altered Past is them well and truly announcing themselves on the scene. Ferociously heavy but with elaborate, extensive and bewildering twists and turns that mix electronica, ambience and more with the blistering belligerence.
It’s often a tsunami of noise and a tumultuous expulsion of instrumental wackiness. Putting it simply, it’s downright dangerous sounding music. Which makes the unexpected tonal shifts and abrupt direction changes both really hard to stomach and extremely fascinating. There’s a real love it or loathe it feel to the album overall. It’s going to resonate with a lot of people, mostly those who want to feel part of something truly chaotic, while also experiencing the passion that bleeds from thoughtcrimes throughout.
It’s a fine balancing act they manage here. The balance of intense and barely contained fury with the desire to open up, tell their stories and make the listener feel connected. Impressive as by time the final notes ring out, there’s a real sense of comradery with thoughtcrimes. Through sheer force and power they make their mark, ensuring the experience that is Altered Past is a long-lasting one.
