Band Interview: Wild Horse
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with indie-pop/rock/punk/funk/hip-hop fusion band, Wild Horse.
1. How did you get started as a band?
We started when Henry (14 at the time) and Ed (12 at the time) joined an after-school music club and had a jamming session. They decided they wanted to start a band and Henry asked his younger brother Jack (11 at the time) to come to a session. At first Jack said no as he didn’t want to be in a band with his brother, but his mum convinced him to go to a session. The first song they played together was a 25-minute version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” and from there they knew they had something special and haven’t looked back since.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We have a very wide range of influences in this band, and our sound is basically a hub for all those influences. We are essentially pop based, with added elements of funk, RnB, dance, hip hop, rock, blues, Latin, punk, gospel and reggae. Essentially, our sound is something new and different from anything else in music right now.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
As mentioned earlier, we have an extremely large set of influences, so we’ll name a few but there are plenty more. We love classic rock bands like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles etc. we also love artists like Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender, The Weeknd, Pavarotti, David Bowie. The list goes on and on.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It has certainly helped in some ways and hindered in others. The rise of social media and streaming has allowed our music to reach a much larger audience far more quickly than what has been possible in the past and has given us lots of opportunities and interesting ways to grow our fan base. However, music streaming does mean that independent artists like us struggle to survive as there is next to no income being made back on the music artists spend thousands of pounds each time to release. No musician does music for the money (you’re a fool if you do) but we have known and played with so many great bands that have had to quit because they simply can’t afford to continue making music anymore with no financial return from their records. It does seem wrong when you realize that they owners of Spotify are billionaires built off the backs of the artists’ work. Nonetheless, streaming, and social media has definitely overall had a positive impact on us and other artists alike.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We all tend to live fairly quiet and normal lives outside of music. It is important to have that balance as being in a band can be extremely fast-paced, chaotic and exhausting. The amount of adrenaline your body gets from playing onstage alone is probably unhealthy. So, when we’re not doing music, you tend to find us working our part time jobs or at the pub with mates. Outside of music, we’re just normal country village boys.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We always have plenty of plans for the future. Our new single JOY RIDE is out everywhere now and is receiving incredible love and support. We already have another song ready for release in the next couple of months and will be heading to the studio soon to record new tracks. We hope to begin planning a tour soon, as we have never been able to tour as we have had school in the way of things our whole way through up until this point. We’re not going anywhere soon, don’t worry about that!
