Album Review: blacktoothed – JULI (Arising Empire)

German rock quartet blacktoothed are celebrating new beginnings, with a name change and their forthcoming album JULI, due for release on the 29th of July 2022 via Arising Empire.

Rocking hard from the very start, blacktoothed showcase their innate catchy calibre and 80s inspirations with If You Wanna Say So. The bright and energetic groove is infectious. The feet start to tap, the fingers start to drum out the beat and the head starts to nod along to the chorus. There’s no better way to start off an album then by hitting the listeners with something they’re going to struggle to forget.

After that, it’s something of a surprise to get a light injection of synth with Saviour but there can be no complaints here, this is an anthem. One that soars lyrically, has a grand sounding chorus and a mighty fine guitar solo.

Variety is something inherent in blacktoothed sound and that continues into the robust guitar sound of So Real. A track with a bit more bite even though it still has massive rock and pop sensibilities. Which is something even more inherent in the following Tidal Wave, a track that you wouldn’t be surprised to hear blaring out of any mainstream radio station speakers. That’s not a slur though, it’s a fact that the modern melodies and heartfelt vocals will have wide appeal.

In fact, that statement applies to the album as whole, incontestable when you have tracks like You Never Know, Between You & The World, and Pulse. Each showcasing blacktoothed’s wonderful blend of rock energy and melodious detail.

It makes JULI an interesting album to listen too and boredom certainly never slips in. The latter part of the album, as large as what came before. The anthemic energy of both Body Bag and Seasons keep things hot and memorable. Leading to a finale that is short but impactful. The melody is the focus, it’s very pop-orientated and the melodramatic vocals wash over the soul.
