EP Review: Verity White – Distilled (WDFD Records)

If you’ve a hankering for something a bit different to the standard indie/alternative-rock scene, Verity White and her forthcoming EP ‘Distilled’ — due for release on 8th of July – may be just what you’re looking for.

Verity explains:

‘Distilled’ is the culmination of many months work for Alex and me, as we worked to find our new sound as a two-piece and to ‘distil’ our essence into it. We’re excited to be taking a more electronic route for this EP, something that we’ve always loved, and to blend this with the alt-rock riffs that we also adore. We both listen to such a variety of Music we often find it hard to pin-point our sound – but we’re proud of this music and we hope you like it too!

One thing you can always guarantee about Verity White’s music is that it’s going to be energetic, charismatic, and thoughtful. Elements that are at the core of the duo (alongside her co-writer and husband, Alex White) but not exclusively the only things of note.

Distilled is a tone shift for Verity White but not so extreme that the indie and alt rock sound we’re more used to is absent. It’s more of a combination, an infusion of electronica in Verity White’s thoughtful, catchy, and passionate sound. Music that makes you feel, in part, thanks to Verity’s powerful and empowering vocals but also because the mellow riffs, melodies and bursts of energy are so memorable.

Distilled is a great example of a band really finding themselves while not being afraid to experiment. The six tracks of the EP offer a ton of variety. The likes of Broken Promises with body-swaying rock tones. A Thousand Times with melodrama, eccentric melodies, and jazz-infused electronic moodiness. The pairing of Just Try It and In Me with their undeniable catchiness. Road to Nowhere, that sees Verity deliver an impassioned and vulnerable sounding vocal performance that sways in the wind of the rhythm.

Before Another Angle wraps up the EP with the most eclectic and weird sounding track of the bunch. The effects used here and the subtle guitar tone makes for an interesting finale. Further proof of the experimental value of this EP overall.
