Album Review: Werewolves – From the Cave to the Grave (Prosthetic Records)

Start digging your bomb shelters: Werewolves are releasing their third full-length album, From the Cave to the Grave, via Prosthetic Records on June 24th, 2022.

Never change Werewolves and happily (sort of), because the world just seems to get crappier by the day, it looks unlikely that they ever will. There’s always going to be something to piss this band off and the day there isn’t, it won’t be because we’re all living in harmony. It will be because we’re nothing but dust.

If, by some baffling chance, this is your first experience of Werewolves and you’re wondering what they sound like. We can sum it up in one word and that word is ‘aggressive’.

Werewolves are the embodiment of aggression and once again, they have an album that is frothing at the mouth. An album made up of nine examples of what happens when a band just stops trying to be nice. Although, it’s not as if Werewolves have ever been nice.

What they are is a revelation in the extreme metal camp. A band that combines agonising speed, blackened death savagery and song-writing creativity to deliver one hell of a head-banger. Par for the course for Werewolves but it should be noted, this isn’t the band sitting still. Not at all in fact, as From the Cave to The Grave is their most refined effort yet.

Destructive and belligerent but in a way that fascinates and motivates. Werewolves are so much more than just an angry band. Even if the major takeaway is just how furious they are. It’s how they channel that ferocity into such an array of meaty, manic and malevolent listens that makes them so special.

There’s not a bad track on From the Cave to The Grave. From the moment Self-Help Book-Burning erupts with the roar of “fuck you, fuck you, fuck you”, you know you’re in for it. Something that stays consistent, all the way to the brain-smashing and muscle-busting finale of Watch Your Mouth.

The end of the fucking world has never sounded so good.
