Album Review: Secret Rule – The Resilient (7Hard Records)

Secret Rule is a modern rock-metal band from Italy, formed at the beginning of 2014, who have released seven albums to date. Now, on June 17th, they will release their eighth, called ‘The Resilient’. Out via 7Hard Records.

An album of catchy rock rhythms and melodies with touches of electronica and symphonic grandiosity, The Resilient has a bombastic sound. One built on a bedrock of thumping riffs and powerful vocals.

A vigorous start with One More and Time to Reset, Secret Rule bring the fire and flames with the first two songs. Before I Wanna Cry really shows off how Secret Rule combine electronica and rock with a song that is part rave, part dance and part head-banging groove. The first proper sign that the band have way more to their sound, if you’re a new listener.

Unlovable then blends the styles Secret Rule portrays nicely, and adds a bit more melodrama within the vocals, especially notable when the male spoken word part arrives. Whereas Obsession is a bit more straight-forward, still very catchy, and has a strong radio-accessibility vibe to it. The Illusion is then a solid head-banger that features some thrilling riffs and an array of interesting vocal styles and shifts. Before The Showdown bristles with gothic, symphonic splendour and Secret Rule get gleefully dark.

There’s a lot to love about this album. Especially if you’re after some heavy rock with a ton of approachability to it. However, it’s the consistency of the catchy rock melodies that makes The Resilient such a resounding listen. Nowhere is that better exemplified than with the exuberant penultimate offering, A Little Piece of Joy and the emotive, attractive and powerful finale of The Hope.
