Band Interview: What the Frnk
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging life are pleased to bring you an interview with bluesy rock and funk band, What the Frnk.
1. How did you get started as a band?
What The Frnk was founded in 2018. The idea, which had been around for a long time, only became reality when singer/guitarist Frank had to make a number of choices in his life. During a “forced” sabbatical of 1.5 years he used the time to found WTF together with Twan (bass guitar). Guus (keys) soon joined, whom they knew from various music sessions. Moments later, drummer Mano joined.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We like to treat the audience to beautiful songs of a combination of rock, funk, soul and all that in a blues flavour. Everything is played with enormous passion and dynamics and you can see and hear that very well, especially live.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
From childhood our influences are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix & Lenny Kravitz. But the inspiration now lies more in the young heroes such as Larkin Poe, Markus King and Gary Clark Jr.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
We only started as a band in 2018 and the music streaming services now mainly help us to promote. We mainly care about playing live so you have to have something to show.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
When the world allows it, I love to travel. Especially Australia and South and Central America are my favorite. I’m wild about jungle trips.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Because we couldn’t play live anymore due to Covid lockdowns, we spent a lot of time on new material. This was also the point where we brought in the horn section to play our new songs. That inspired us. The result is the single “Speed of Light” released last year. We also recorded some other unreleased tracks. Our main focus now is to play live again and we plan to write and release several other tracks over the course of 2022.
