Album Review: Bowling For Soup – Pop Drunk Snot Bread (Brando Records/Que-So Records)
Pop Drunk Snot Bread is the brand-new album from Texas’s favourite pop punk quartet, the Grammy nominated Bowling for Soup. The 11th studio album by Bowling for Soup and first since 2016’s Drunk Dynasty, Pop Drunk Snot Bread will be released on April 22nd, 2022 via Brando Records/Que-So Records.
Regardless of if you like or dislike Bowling for Soup’s pop-punk sound, most will agree that they are a band that is impossible to dislike. Perpetually positive, even in dark times, but also incredibly honest, they have crafted a lengthy and stellar career without ever compromising on what they do. Their fanbase is huge and supportive, and even the most ardent naysayer of the band will admit to tapping their foot to some of the band’s bigger hits.
…but what have they done since? That’s often a criticism thrown at them. The answer? They’ve done what they want to do and the latest example of that is Pop Drunk Snot Bread.
Now, expecting some extravagant shift in sound or style is akin to expecting the sun to not rise in the morning. It’s more likely that it will, and that Bowling for Soup will continue to ply their radio-friendly, accessible to all, pop-punk sound.
That is certainly the case with this new album but don’t think of that as a negative. Bowling for Soup know what they are doing and do it as passionately as ever. In fact, several of this album’s hits have already been out and about for some time. The likes of the smash-hits, Alexa Bliss, Getting Old Sucks (But Everybody’s Doing It) and Killin’ ‘Em With Kindness.
Three massive Bowling for Soup anthems on a 15-track album that has plenty more. The likes of the defiant and powerful opener Greatest of All Time. The stupidly catchy I Wanna Be Brad Pitt, the pointed but very anthemic Burn Out, the pop-punk 101 banger that is The Letter 3 (Sitcom Song) and the, sure to be, party hit, After All These Beers.
Then you have a handful of melodramatic and heartfelt efforts, the likes of The Best We Can and Wouldn’t Change A Things.
Even the tracks that are just a little ‘ho-hum’, which there are a few, are still packed with energy, singalong moments and plenty of feel-good, relatable honesty.
It’s a very enjoyable listen that realistically isn’t going to change anyone’s mind about the band. If they’re not your cup of tea, you’ll still feel the same and likewise, if they’re a hearty drink you’ve always loved, you’ll be downing what Pop Drunk Snot Bread has to offer with glee.
