Album Review: Twin Void – Free From Hardtimes (Electric Valley Records)

Electric Valley Records presents Twin Void’s debut album, Free from Hardtimes, due out on the 1st of April 2022 on different variants of vinyl and digital formats.

Sludgy, punk-infused rock and roll. Twin Void might be moving at a rocking pace throughout this album but don’t be fooled into thinking there isn’t a lot of thought-provoking messages throughout. The band choosing to focus on their feelings surrounding the COVID-19 situation, the passing of so many great musicians and the life experiences the main songwriter, Nathan, has had.

Such serious subjects portrayed through such raw, punky and dirty sounding rock music might not work in the hands of many bands. However, Twin Void have proven they know what they’re doing even before the release of this debut album.

The result is a 9-track album that moves as though the devil is chasing, an album that feels raw but purposefully and an album that hits harder because of the topics. It’s a vibrant record that doesn’t hang around or waste time. Several tracks coming in at under 2 minutes, whereas the longer ones are often the most ‘journey like’ of the record. Case in point is the track Bird Days and its ever-evolving tempo and sludgy tones, or the powerful touches of melody and heavy groove hit that is Sky Burial. A track that is about the grieving process that Nathan went through upon losing his grandfather.

When they unleash chaos and just go hell for leather, it’s often when they’re at their best though. With the likes of Poor Ol’ Me, Set Me on Fire and California Death-Rattle delivering frantic and feverish blasts of punk-infused rock. The latter of which features the inclusion of Liam Joseph Cormier of Cancer Bats. That’s quite nice.

Sure to make a splash, Free from Hardtimes is the right amount of heavy rock, raw punkiness and dirty groove to garner some serious attention.
