Album Review: Matt Pearce & The Mutiny – The Soul Food Store (Mutinear Records)

Matt Pearce & The Mutiny will release their eagerly awaited second album ‘The Soul Food Store’ through Mutinear Records on the 29th of April 2022.

An album packed with funky rock tunes. Music to make you move and groove, music to make you contemplative and music to make you feel that little bit nostalgic. The latter because there is a bit of the vintage rock about Matt Pearce & The Mutiny but it doesn’t sound dated.

From the very start, the dancefloor is filling up thanks to the funky opener Got a Thing Going On. A catchy rock tune that blends jazzy elements, thanks to the sax use and that it just happens to have one heck of a singalong chorus.

A tough track to follow but All the Gods, Promised Land and Bring It All to Me see Matt Pearce & The Mutiny put the effort in. Each one featuring a bevy of interesting instrumentation and Pearce’s smooth vocals. His voice has the power to command the attention of a packed room but also the ability to lull you to sleep. The latter of those tracks in particular, when combined with the piano melody might just do that.

The jazzy tones make a big return for the energy uptake that comes from the groovy cabaret that is From Here to the Moon. Before the title track turns the lights down for something more personal sounding and Don’t Take It So Hard seems to have the mantra of ‘go big or go home’. Seeing as it’s nearly seven and a half minutes long and manages to keeping the foot tapping and head nodding all the way throughout. Check out the guitar soloing near the end… wow.

Still enjoying yourself? Chances are the answer will be a definitive yes. Matt Pearce & The Mutiny certainly are and that shows in the funk-driven Never Get Away from Love, the finger-snapping and dance floor-filler that is A Better Way, the mellow and heartfelt Beautiful Disguise, and the massive rocking finale of King of the World.

A crowd-pleasing album.
