Album Review: Eucharist – I Am The Void (Helter Skelter Productions/Regain Records)

Helter Skelter Productions (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) presents the LONG-awaited third album of Sweden’s Eucharist, I Am the Void, out on March 25th, 2022 on CD, double-LP vinyl, and cassette tape formats.

A darker and colder version of Eucharist that made such a name for themselves in the 90s with 2 beloved albums. The 2016 reunion finally bears fruit in 2022 and the result is something that will intrigue and amaze both long-term fans and those arriving to the congregation late.

Their infamous melodic death metal style has been twisted and warped into something with a much blacker and bleaker sound. Presenting blistering, forceful hellish fire and delivering it in aggressive, savage fashion that just happens to have a stronger rhythmic foundation than blacker metal often features. An array of riffs, soloing and epic atmospheres and melodic interludes ensures that what made Eucharist such a name hasn’t been forgotten either.

Though the predominant feature of this album is black metal and the instrumentation, in particular the drumming, really reflects that. As do the vocals, a scathing and horror-fuelled blast of screaming and screeching gutturalness. Regardless, it’s important to point out that this isn’t exclusively, a black metal album. There’s just way to much going on with the tracks, to many elements that show the deft touch of death and melodic death metal.

Across 12 tomes of heaviness, Eucharist show that the intensity that has always been at the forefront of their sound has evolved. Or maybe that should be ‘de-evolved’ as the blackened sound is certainly cut from the old-school cloth. Which makes sense, this band rose to prominence in the 90s and promptly disappeared for around 18 years. The void they were living in has been opened and they’re back to spread their dark sound again.
