Album Review: Devoured Elysium – Void (Gore House Productions)

Gore House Productions presents ‘Void Grave’, the sophomore album by the Turkish death squad, Devoured Elysium. ‘Void Grave’ is a cosmic tale inspired by the likes of the Doom game franchise and it will be released on February 18th, 2022.

Opening with a very ‘video-game’ style intro (Setup), Devoured Elysium set the scene for a brash and technically proficient album of crushing death metal. The immediate feeling is revulsion as the title track explodes with guttural fury and methodical sharpness. Be careful, the guitars are like razors here and slice the brain matter into pieces with ease.

It doesn’t get any less cutting on the following Mastermind or Green Screen Failure. However, both have some interesting tempo/tonal shifts, and both really show just how integral the drums are to the heaviness of this album. It’s not a battering, it’s something far more violent.

Deus Ex Machina is one of the longer tracks on the album and sees Devoured Elysium play around with a brief bit of chilling atmosphere before erupting like a hellish horde bent on the destruction of humankind. Slam Panzer, which features slamming death metal band Traumatomy, then picks the pace up for an absolute frenzy of technical riffing, pulverising drums and crusted vocals. Before Spinerender makes good on its title with a showcase of the most guttural, body-twisting and head-banging inducing music so far. That it lasts for only a little over a minute makes it all the more intense.

There’s no hanging around here, Devoured Elysium are caught up in a feverish rage and with Oracle and Chrono-Shift, they expel the last of their vehemence in spectacular style.

Void Grave’s urgency, mixed with a simply crushing expulsion of death metal and complimented by cut-throat technicality makes it an album that is well worth checking out.
