Horror Movie Review: Pop Punk Zombies (2011)

Starring Tyler Albrecht, Jason Anderson and Natoli Barbera, Pop Punk Zombies is a 2011 zombie horror film directed by Steve Dayton and written by Brian Leis.

Well, we’ve done Death Metal Zombies so why not Pop Punk Zombies? If you know what we do here at GBHBL then you know the moment we saw the title, we were all in. Sure, the expectation was that it was going to be low-budget trash but surely it would be fun and the soundtrack alone would make it worthwhile?

Set your expectations of this movie low then find room to set them even lower. It’s trash and not entertaining trash. In fact, it’s so disappointing as no-one is up to the task of making this enjoyable.

The story sees an unscrupulous music agent find a way to bring the dead back to life as zombies. So, with that in his pocket, he brings back a recently deceased band. Seeing the draw of the first ever zombie punk band as a way to make a ton of money. The theme of the greedy music industry even trying to make money off bands when they are dead is not exactly done with subtly here.

The zombie rockers are going to be making their live debut at a local club to Eddy and Ciez. The former doesn’t really want to go but sees it as a chance to try and make good with his ex-girlfriend, Lisa.

The show starts, the crowd are into it, even with the protestors outside, and everything looks good. That is until the zombies break free and start attacking the crowd. Now, it’s a real punk rock show as Eddy is forced to fight for his survival and help save his friends from becoming food for these pop punk zombies.

A fun premise bogged down by cheapness and below average talent, it’s never nice to slam all involved in a movie but simply put, Pop Punk Zombies is a bad movie. It looks like crap, sounds even worse and really drags its heels once the carnage gets going. Huge swathes of this movie can be best described as mind-numbing.

The soundtrack? It’s cool to hear some original punk tracks but the banality of the movie overall ends up sinking any interest in the soundtrack too.

This is a stinking corpse of a movie. Avoid it like the plague.
