Horror Short Review: ASMR (2022)
ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is better known as the tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. We have all experienced it, often in less relaxed environments. Although these days, videos intending to induce the feeling are used for relaxation and meditation purposes.
It is that feeling that this horror short intends to induce through fright.
Written and directed by Alex Magaña, it sees Christy settle down for a session of ASMR led by a softly spoken woman. Spooky things begin to happen though as the ASMR artist works her way through some triggers. Whatever the ASMR artist does begins to happen around Christy. At first, it’s just candles going out but then a door opens and footsteps approach.
This is a clever short, utilising modern things designed to put us at ease but instead creating tension and scares. That it also invokes ASMR shows just how ingenious a short it is. That being said, like a lot of ACM shorts, its payoff is not quite as good as the build.
Still, if you want to experience that tingling sensation, this is a good short for it. Check it out below.
