Album Review: Abyssus – Death Revival (Transcending Obscurity Records)
Greek death metal band Abyssus will release their new album, Death Revival on January 21st, 2022 via Transcending Obscurity Records.
A bit more than just your average late 80s/early 90s death metal throwback, Abyussus infuse their furious sound with thrashier elements. The end result is an album with all the brash heaviness to wake up even the most sluggish of revivalists.
A succinct listen, Death Revival features 7 tracks of gurning and garish noise that comes in at around 33 minutes. Plenty of time for Abyssus to smash things up. Which they certainly do. Discharging a ferocious style of heaviness that calls back to the heyday of death metal. Though, what makes the album that little bit harder and harsher is a thrashy backdrop. Fast, concentrated, and ruthless heaviness. The group are hitting as rigidly as possible and with as much force as they can muster.
There’s no need for variety here. No need for tonal shifts or surprises. Though two tracks do pass the 6-minute mark, so there’s more depth to be found. Regardless though, Abyssus pack each track with enough detail to keep things interesting.
It’s not going to set the metal world alight but that’s fine, it’s for all who love their metal to have a crunch and crash. Those who want a revival but aren’t frightened of hearing a fresher mix of two old-school metal sounds. Death Revival is an apt title.
